Naturopathic Medicine

Naturopathic medicine is an complete holistic medical system that focuses on functional diagnostic techniques and uses natural approaches to stimulate the body’s internal healing response. Naturopathic philosophy favors a holistic approach and minimal use of surgery and drugs.

Naturopathy has its origins in the Nature Cure movement of Europe. The term was coined in 1895 by John Scheel and popularized by Benedict Lust, the “father of U.S. naturopathy”.

Naturopathy is practiced in many countries, especially the United States and Canada, and is subject to different standards of regulation. In the United States and Canada, the designation of Naturopathic Doctor (ND) may be awarded after completion of a program of study at an accredited Naturopathic medical school that includes the study of basic medical sciences as well as natural remedies and medical care. The scope of practice varies widely between jurisdictions. In New Jersey, Naturopathy is extremely limited in it’s scope of practice.

In most of Europe, naturopathic medicine is practiced and researched among BOTH holistic practitioners and conventional MD’s. There is an enormous amount of ongoing evidence based scientific research in Europe and throughout most of the world. Much of the methods and therapies have yet to be FDA approved (like many medications and medical devices), they have shown to be highly effective and safe with little or no side effects. Today all one has to do it dig a little on the interment to find such studies and the results speak for themselves.
